Tree pruning

Pruning is a broad term covering selective branch removal for a range of reasons - removing dead, damaged or crossing growth, without necessarily changing the tree's overall size or shape.

Crown reduction

Crown reduction specifically reduces the overall height and/or spread of a tree, while trying to retain an appropriate, natural-looking shape. It's a more substantial piece of work than routine pruning.

Which does your tree need?

If a tree just has some dead or crossing branches, pruning is usually sufficient. If the whole tree has become too large for its surroundings, crown reduction is more likely to be appropriate.
